In recognition of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark desegregation decision in Holmes v. City of Atlanta, the Gate City Bar Foundation will host the Founders’ Cup Golf Tournament to raise money for its annual scholarships.
In 1951, Roscoe E. Thomas, who was one of the founders of the Gate City Bar Association, represented Alfred “Tup” Holmes and other plaintiffs, as they challenged the City of Atlanta’s segregation laws. Mr. Holmes and his playing partners had been denied entrance to the Bobby Jones Golf Course because they were black.
In 1955, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the City of Atlanta and its segregation laws that denie black citizens access to municipal golf courses.
